Son of Samuel McKnight Green & Elizabeth Johnson Green. In 1899 he married Emma Lumpkin, daughter of Maj. William D. Lumpkin of Memphis, TN. He received a B.S. degree from the Third District State Normal School, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, 1885. In 1890 he became the principal of the literary department at the Missouri School for the Blind, then its superintendent in 1885.
He was a member of the National Association of Charities & Correction, the National Education Association, the American Association of Workers for the Blind. He served on the executive committee of the American Instructors of the Blind.
