Wendell Marvin Cook, 81, formerly of Lebanon, died on Friday at the Sherwood Care Center in Veneta.

Wendell was born in Burwell, Neb., the son of Guy and Elisabeth (Ostrom) Cook. At the age of 9, he moved with his family to Lebanon.

He attended school in Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1943. He later attended the University of Washington where he received his degree in meteorology. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he began his career as a meteorologist with the U.S. Weather Bureau. He worked throughout the western United States during his career. He retired in 1979.

He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, spending time with his family and church. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eugene.

Wendell married to Blythe Lenox in Mt. Clemens, Mich., on Feb. 2, 1944.

He was preceded in death by infant son Stewart Cook; brothers Bud, Kenneth and Dwight Cook, and sisters Frances Kubicek and Margaret Blatchley.

He is survived by wife of 61 years Blythe Cook of Junction City; daughter Annette Allen of Hawthorne, N.J.; sons Alan Cook of Junction City and Steven Cook of San Diego; eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Private burial will be in the Lebanon IOOF Cemetery. To leave an online condolence to the family, go to www.hustonjost.com.
