BLUEFIELD — Fred Stewart Asbury, 84, of Rt. 3 Bluefield, W.Va. (Bluewell), formerly of Coaldale, W.Va., died Friday, February 26, 2010 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Darrell Poe, with whom he and his wife made their home since July 2009.
He was born on October 09, 1925 in Boissevain, Va. to the late Walter and Laura Christain Asbury. He attended the Lorton Lick Wesleyan Church. "Daddy fought a good fight, and he has finished his course" (II Tim 4:7), and now he has gone home to be with the Lord. No matter what daddy went through in his sickness, he always thought of others first.
He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Oswald in 1944. He loved to work with his hands making bird houses, rocking chairs and other woodcrafts. He also loved to fish and spending time with his family. Throughout life, Fred worked as a truck driver for Blizzard Inc. and Austin Powder for 25 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys and Dorothy.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Carlene Bailey Asbury of Bluewell, W.Va.; one son, Ricky and Sandy Asbury of Dangerfield, Texas; three daughters, Freda and Barry Wright of Bluefield, Va., Rita and Darrell Poe of Bluewell, W.Va., Reba and Frankie Whitt of Brushfork, W.Va. He has six grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; special friends and caregivers, Dr. James Lesmett, Dr. V.R. Phade and the Hospice Compassus staff for their special care over the past year.
He will be greatly missed by all those who knew his love and kindness for others.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 02, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, W.Va. with the Reverend Barry Lynn Wright and the Reverend Roger Lafferty officiating the service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W.Va., where military graveside rites will be held conducted for Mr. Asbury by the West Virginia Honor Guard.
Friends and family may call at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, W.Va. on Monday, March 01, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers Barry Wright Jr., Kevin Wright, Darrell Poe Jr., Freddie Poe, Marty Woolridge, Frankie Whitt and Bryant Miller. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be great-grandson, Tyler Poe and niece, Mellissa Fowler.
