US Congressman. Born in Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania, he served in the State Militia during the Revolutionary War and later became a farmer. His political career began as a member of the State House of Representatives (1797 to 1801), followed by terms in the State Senate (1802 to 1804) and as Washington County Commissioner (1806 to 1809). In 1808 Lyle was elected to the US Congress and served four terms, representing Pennsylvania's 10th District (1809 to 1813) and 12th District (1813 to 1817). He was also a trustee of Jefferson (now Washington and Jefferson) College from 1802 to 1822.
