Thomas F. Schlagel, 84, of Murdock died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Thursday, September 29, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar.

Thomas Francis Schlagel was born July 8, 1927, in Dublin Twp., Swift Co., MN, the son of Anton and Catherine (Schmidt) Schlagel. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Murdock, graduating from Murdock High School in 1945. After high school, he attended Dunwoody Technical Institute, graduating in 1946, with a carpentry degree. Tom began his career in construction as a self-employed carpenter. In 1950, Tom entered the US Army, where he served in Korea from June 1951-April 1952. He received an honorable discharge in May 1952. On June 30, 1956, Tom was united in marriage to Lucille "LuAnn" Sames at Incarnation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN. Following their marriage they moved to Murdock, where Tom continued working in the construction trade.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he had served on the building committee and as an usher.

Tom also served 32 years as a volunteer fireman for the City of Murdock, serving over 20 years as the department's chief. He also served on the Glacial Ridge Vocational Center Advisory Committee, was a First Responder and a Firearms Safety Instructor for many years.

In his spare time, Tom enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and traveling.

He is survived by his children, Matthew (and Michelle) Schlagel of Kerkhoven, Mary (and Tony) La Patka of Willmar, Laura Schlagel of Willmar, and John (and Sandra) Schlagel of Willmar; and grandchildren, Sarah Schlagel, Nathan Schlagel, Bryan Schlagel, Thomas La Patka, and Catherine La Patka. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Maurice Armstrong.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Anthony, sisters, Agnes Stelzner, Martha Spartz, and Cecelia Solt, and his wife LuAnn on December 13, 2009.
