John's father was born in Georgia and mother in Mississippi. He was first married to Vinita's sister Zelda. When he and Vinita married, he was a train conductor and lived in Greenville, Texas. On the 1910 Census, he was listed as a farmer in Morris County, Texas with his wife Vinita. When they moved back to Daingerfield, Texas, he went into business with two of his brothers known as Irvin Bros. It was known as the cradle to the grave business, since it included merchandise for all stages of life, as well as a funeral business. John was the funeral director, but not an embalmer. They originally used an embalmer out of Mt. Pleasant. On the 1920 Census, he was listed as a merchant in a general store in Morris County, Texas with his wife Vinita and son Wilbyrd. On the 1930 Census, he was listed as a retail merchant in Daingerfield, Texas with his wife Vinita, son Wilbyrd, and daughter Vinita. On the 1940 Census, he was listed as a merchant in Daingerfield, Morris, Texas with his wife Vinita and daughter Vinita. Later, he owned a funeral home and had their own embalmer. This was dissolved in 1949. John owned quite a bit of land on which he had share croppers.

His middle name on the headstone is misspelled.
