Martha Ann Mahan was the 2nd child of 10 children born to Rev. John Bennington Mahan and Mary Polly (Curtis) Mahan.

Martha was born in Clermont Co, Ohio, but when Martha was age 16 in 1840, this family was living in Brown County, Ohio. This is the year Martha Ann met the love of her life and was married to John Willoughby Jackson Myers. They were joined in marriage on Sept. 16, 1840.

Martha gave birth to their first child, Mary Jane on March 11, 1842 in Sardinia, Ohio.

On Dec. 15, 1844, Martha's beloved father, John Bennington, died from tuberculosis contracted while serving 3 months in Jail. He was charged with helping a 12 year old Slave Boy after he escaped and swam the Ohio River.

After her father's death, Martha and husband John Willoughby relocated in McLean Co, Illinois where they lived on their farm for the remainder of their lives.

Martha's mother lived for 35 more years after the death of Martha's father, John Bennington. Her mother died of Malaria Fever on August 30, 1879.

Martha and John Willoughby had a total of 10 children born to their union. The youngest child was born when Martha was age 57. Sadly this baby died at 14 days old. Her name was Margaret Jane, born January 24, 1881.

Martha also lost a son, George on January 24, 1898. He was 43 years old.

At age 77 on the 1900 Census, Martha and husband, John Willoughby, still have their farm in Lexington, Illinois. Their oldest son, John G. Myers, appears to be working the farm. His father is listed as Landlord with son and 2 grandchildren living on the farm with himself and Martha Ann.

Martha's life was one of dedication and sacrifice for her children and family. On June 8, 1902, after 62 years of marriage, Martha passed over into eternity at age 78. All of her children were present at the funeral except one daughter, Mrs. William Clawson of Allerton, Iowa, who was kept at home on account of the serious condition of her son who was kicked in the head by a horse a few days previous.

Martha's husband, John Willoughby lived for 8 more years. They were both laid to rest in Lexington Cemetery.
