He was employed as a clerk in a general store (1872-78), manager of a blast furnace company (1878-91), prothonotary of Blair County, (1891-97) and president of the Hollidaysburg Trust Company, (1898-1911). In 1911, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-second Congress, serving until 1913. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his position as president of the Hollidaysburg Trust Company, until his death at age 76 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.
