Larry Dean Allen, 68, of Effingham, born Dec. 26,1939, beloved son of Delbert and Margaret (Babbs) Allen, passed away peacefully at 11:25 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Effingham, after battling esophageal cancer.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Effingham, with the Rev. Theodore C. Gall officiating. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham, and one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donation in Larry's name be given to St. John's Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
He was baptized Dec. 21, 2007, and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Effingham.
After graduating from Effingham High School in 1957, the year Effingham High school's football tear was undefeated and Larry was manager, Larry went into apprenticeship with Effingham Electric, becoming a journeyman wireman in IBEW Local 146. Luckily for Larry, he was able to work side-by-side with his father and two younger brothers for most of his career. Shortly after starting his career, Larry married Alice Siebert Feb. 10, 1962, in Effingham. They were blessed with three children: Timothy, Tamara and Tonya. Larry loved historical family road trips, watching St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs baseball and collecting coins. He was friendly to all, always had story to tell and had a wicked sense of humor. He retired as a union electrician.
Larry is survived by his wife, Alice of Effingham and two daughters, Tamara Allen of Los Angeles and Tonya (husband, Jeffrey) Faber of Chicago; grandchildren, Abigail and William Faber; mother, Margaret Allen of Effingham; and brothers, David (wife Carol) Allen and John Allen, both of Effingham.
He was preceded in death by his father, Delbert Allen; and his son, Timothy Allen Oct. 13, 2007. May he rest in peace.
