The inscription on the stone gives Charles's death year as 1793. However, burial records show he was buried at St Andrew's, Newcastle upon Tyne, on 9th April 1795, plus other internet sources show him as born 1751 and died 1795. He served as an organist at St Nicholas in Newcastle, and published a book of hymns.

Charles was the son of Charles Avison. The plaque beside their grave states that he was "The most important English concerto composer of the 18th century was buried alongside his wife, son and grandson".
