Rugby international. He was a New Zealand rugby rep (All Black) who played 61 matches, including 8 Tests in 1922 to 1926 and 1928. This was an unusually high number of games for this time and reflects the fact that he made two major tours, to the United Kingdom (1924/5) and South Africa (1928). His durability and value to the team was such that it was felt that he was always needed on the field. He captained the All Blacks in all 4 Tests in South Africa. His two brothers, Cyril and Laurence were also All Blacks, and he was a noted boxer, being defeated in the 1921 NZ amateur heavyweight final by a man who was also an All Black later.
