Hovey Slayton Dabney, a native of Charlottesville, passed at the University of Virginia Hospital due to various complications caused by rheumatoid arthritis.
He was born at his parent's home on Second Street in Charlottesville on September 18, 1923. The son of Whythe O. Dabney and Mabelle W. Dabney. He had one brother and three sisters, all of whom predeceased him.
He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a radio operator on a B17 in Foggia, Italy. He was shot down on his first combat mission over Budapest, Hungary. He broke both ankles when he parachuted behind enemy lines. After his recovery he completed twenty-five missions and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville where he had served on the Board of Deacons. Following the war, Mr. Dabney attended the University of Virginia, where he did his undergraduate work in political science and received a law degree in 1949. He was a member of Theta Chi, O.D.K. and Sigma Nu Phi. He was a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia for eight years and served as Rector of the University of Virginia for six years. He helped organize the University's Health Service Foundation and served as its Chairman for eight years. Mr. Dabney pursued a career in banking in Charlottesville starting with National Bank in Trust Company in 1949. He became President of National Bank and Trust Company in 1963. National Bank later became Jefferson Bankshares and was acquired by Wachovia in 1999. He served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of National Bank and Trust Company and Jefferson Bankshares. Mr. Dabney served as President of the Virginia Bankers' Association 'in 1982. He had many civic responsibilities and cared for many people in Charlottesville and throughout the State during his outstanding life.
Mr. Dabney is survived by Patricia S. Dabney, his wife of fifty-eight years, his children, Slate Dabney, Jill Cave and Ann Wampler, eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held in the University of Virginia Chapel with the Rev. Jim Baker officiating.
