Hesperia, March 8 - Oliver J. Morse, long prominent in the business and official life of Hesperia and proprietor of the Hesperia Crate Works, died at his home here yesterday. Mr. Morse suffered a stroke last May 25 and had been ill since. He was 68 years old, a lifelong resident of Oceana County, having been born in Benona Township Nov. 21, 1868. Mr. Morse was a former member of the village council and also served on the school board at one time. He was justice of the peace of Newfield Township for 22 years and a member of Shelby I.O.O.F. Lodge. Mr. Morse spent the early part of his life in Benona. He later moved to Shelby where he established a bakery and a few years later, a hardware store which he operated until 1914 when he moved to a farm here. Five years later he came to the village and founded the Hesperia Crate Works. He was married to Martha Teichthesen of Claybanks Township Jan. 7, 1893, at St. John's Catholic Church in Claybanks. Surviving besides the widow are 4 daughters, Mrs. Dayton Kroepel, Mrs. Ernest Webber and Mrs. Lyle McLaren, all of Hesperia, and Alice of Muskegon; 5 sons, Edward, Frank, and Charles of Hesperia and Oliver and Arthur of Muskegon; one brother, Roscoe of Shelby; an aunt, Mrs. Nancy Crippen of New Haven, Ind.; an uncle, Frank Grover of Kalamazoo; and 9 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Wednesday from St. Michael's Catholic Church, Brunswick, and burial will be made in St. John's cemetery, in Claybanks.
