U.S. Continental Congressman, Presidential Cabinet Member. He attended Doctor Allison's Academy Pennsylvania and then engaged in mercantile pursuits. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel, in command of the 3rd Battalion of the Pennsylvania Associators, in 1776 and was promoted Brigadier General of the Pennsylvania Militia, serving (1877 to 1878). He was a member of the U.S. Continental Congress, serving (1786 to 1788) and was surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia, in 1789. In 1789, he was appointed by President George Washington the first U.S. Secretary Treasurer under the Constitution and served until his resignation, in 1801. After leaving office, he lived in retirement on his estate until his death.
