"His late-in-life marriage in 1915 was to a mother of two, Margaret/Margarette Butler, married to a Mr. Butler before she was counted as a widow with her sons in Lansing, Mich. in the 1900 US Census, Stephen and Margaret were married by her elder son. The son, La Don Barber, aka LaDon Barber was probably not just a part-time Reverend, but the engineer who would file a patent in 1931 for a new thing for automobiles, tail lights that also activated upon stopping. The rights were assigned to General Motors, which continued to cite the old patent in new patents for world-wide application through at least 1954.

Margaret's maiden name was Jackson, her birth place Indiana. Stephen's birth city and mother's name are known due to that 1915 marriage record, his death record having just given his birth state and father's name and occupation. It's not known whether he had been married earlier, as his records between his 1880 Census and his 1915 marriage are hard to find.

He was called Stephen in his first US Census, the 1860, done in Pontiac, Michigan, at age 8, eldest of the five children born thus far. For the next Census, the 1870, the transcriber mis-spelled the family name. By the 1880, he had gone with parents and four much younger siblings still at home, to Adrian, Mich, He worked as a barber and called himself J. Stephen Craig.

His brother Horace E. , aka HE, lived in Lansing for the 1910 Census. Stephen had long been cited as in Lansing in family obituaries, so his move to Missouri was perhaps for retirement. " - Contributor: JBrown, IA, MN, Calif, AustinTX (48697180)
