1875-1956
Swen (Svend) Ellestad was born in the Valdres district of Norway and emigrated to Wisconsin with his parents at the age of five, sailing from Liverpool, England, aboard the SS Marathon to NYC. Swen was very clever and handy and made numerous, unique things out of the materials at hand, such as skis, a large cage with a wheel for squirrels, a dancing dummy, and (most importantly) a beautiful Hardanger Fiddle, which his father took with him when he "ran off" to Norway in 1923. His father (and the fiddle—see photo) returned to Valders in 1925.
