James Wesley Wallace was born on Sep 14, 1916 at Kyle, McDowell County, WV to his parents James W. Wallace, born in NC and Nancy Elizabeth Dolinger Wallace, born in Grayson County, VA. His dad worked in the Coal Mines. They rented their home. From 1908 to 1917, 5 children were born. James had 5 older siblings, William Delmar, Thomas Franklin, Bertha Mae, and Walter Lee Wallace.

Jessie Marvin is born on Apr 20, 1918. He will die on Nov 24, 1922.)

1920
In the 1920 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS, page 12 of 36, lines 71-77, we find his 29 year old young widowed mother has moved the family back to Park Road, Wilson District, Grayson County, VA. This was close to where she was born. The children's ages were from age 11 years down to age 1. They rented their home. Their neighbors were his maternal grandfather, Wesley Washington and step-grandmother, Alice F. Prewitt Dolinger and their children, his mother's half siblings, Robert Fred, Ethel Larue and Ennis Dolinger. Wesley worked as a Laborer for the Railroad. I'm sure he helped his daughter and family. Elizabeth did not have a job and her children was too young to work a public job. Wesley and Alice owned their home. They did have a mortgage.

1930
In the 1930 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS, page 29 of 41, lines 19-24, we find widowed Elizabeth and her children except baby Jesse Marvin, who had died at Whitetop, Grayson County, VA, at the age of 4 on Nov 24, 1922 due to Croup/Pneumonia. They are now living in Fireco Town, Shady Spring District, Raleigh County, WV. They rented their home. James is now 13 years old and going to school. His oldest brother has lost his hearing due to Spinal Meningitis. Delmar took care of his mother, put out a garden and helped with anything that needed to be done. His brothers Frank, age 21, and Walter, age 16 are both working at the Coal Mines. His sister, Bertha is at home when this 1930 census was recorded, however, she soon marries James "Jim" Wood, (born in Mercer County, WV) on Jan 27, 1930. (She is also listed in the 1930 census with her husband and his family).

1939
His brother Walter marries Belle Wiseman on Dec 23, 1939 in Tazewell, VA. Belle was born in NC.

1940
In the 1940 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS, page 26 of 26, lines 41-44, we find James, age 23; his widowed mother, age 51; Delmar, age 31 and Frank, age 29. They rented their home in Fireco. Frank works as a Track Layer for the Coal Mines making $750.00 and James is working on the Mine-Tipple as a Car Dropper for the Coal Mines making $400.00.

His brother Frank marries Lucille Roark, (born in WV) on June 22, 1940.

His brother Walter and his newlywed wife Belle is also listed in this census, page 25 of 62, lines 31-32. Walter's occupation is a Tippleman, Night Operator at the Coal Mine making 750.00.
