Edward James Sawyer was born a slave in Fayetteville, NC to Edward J. Sawyer, Sr. and Charlotte Hall. His father and mother were slaves who were brought from Florida to North Carolina and sold by speculators.
On October 16, 1879, he married Ella Georgiana David and they had 12 children [see below].
He was a wealthy man who held various positions in the community: lawyer, principal, postmaster, business owner, land owner, and ran a black newspaper.
Edward James Sawyer, his wife Ella, and son Edward Joseph were originally buried in the black cemetery behind Oak Ridge Cemetery and were moved to Ideal Cemetery once it was established.
