Sgt. Tonnelier was a career United States Marine Corps. veteran. He first joined the Marine Corps. in April of 1919 and eventually retired as a 1st Lieutenant in 1949. During his career with the Corps. he was stationed in China, Nicaragua, Pearl Harbor and Mare Island Naval Shipyard. He saw sea duty on the USS Chaumont and the USS Henderson. He was also a World War II veteran. He was awarded the Marine Corps. Good Conduct medal with one reenlistment bar and was eligiable for the Yangtze Campaign Service medal, the Second Nicaraguan Campaign Service medal, the American Theater Campaign medal and the World War II Victory medal.
