Civil War Veteran - Was a Lt. in 47th Virginia Infantry and later in CO. D, Virginia 9th Cavalry Regt. He spent eight months as a prisoner of war. Married Lalla Gresham, February 27, 1878, Galveston, Texas. Thomas was the son of Thomas and Maria Louise (Hurst) Ball. He was educated in private schools and went to college at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was admitted to the Virginia bar, February 22, 1858, in Richmond, Virginia. After ten years they moved to Texas and he practiced law there for fourteen years. He then returned to Virginia and practiced law until 1907 when he moved to California.

Served in the Texas State Senate 1876; was Assistant Attorney General of Texas; was appointed Special U.S. Attorney of Texas. He is listed in the "California History of the Bench and Bar of Southern California 1909."
