Underwood was the son of Chrispi Anos and Frances (Peters) Walker.

Underwood married Louisa "Lovicey" Bailey about 1849.

As of 1859 Underwood owned and operated a grist-mill on Bluff Fork of Devils Fork approximately three miles of southwest of, what is now, Egeria, West Virginia.

On July 4, 1861 Underwood enlisted to serve twelve months in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was assigned to 2nd. Company H 60th Virginia Regiment of Infantry. This was a company formed of Mercer County men which included two of Underwood's nephews, Burrell U. Walker and George C. Walker.

August 31, 1861, Underwood, as No. 2690 was listed at regimental roll call as absent from company due to being sick at Salem, Virginia.

January 15, 1862, Underwood was absent at roll call for being reported as sick at his home in Mercer County, Virginia.

February 28, 1862, Underwood was carried on Confederate Army Roll as absent without leave in Mercer County, Virginia - his health deteriorating at this point.

April 1, 1862, Underwood Walker died at his home on Devils Fork, the Confederate Army records listed cause of death as tuberculosis.

It appears his wife, Louisa, died shortly after the death of Underwood and the seven living children at their tender ages became scattered into other families, some being placed with relatives.

November 29, 1862, A confirmation statement was made of Underwood Walker's death April 1, 1862 by Certificate No. 581. This statement being made by the register of Officers and Soldiers of the Army of the Confederate States of America covering those who were killed in battle or died of wounds or diseases.

Over hills Underwood's body was taken by horses and sled to be buried in the Walker-Hatcher Cemetery in Egeria, West Virginia. Underwood and Louisa were buried in the southwest section of the cemetery with unlettered native fieldstones as markers. However in the 1980's, some of Underwood's great-great nephews erected a military marker in honor on Underwood and his service.

Underwood had owned a 117 acre homeplace. His father executed a deed on April 24, 1876 for $245 for Green Ferguson. Each of Underwood and Louisa's children would receive $35 when they reached 21 years of age.
