He leaves behind David and Bill Hoyt his adopted brothers and his brother and sister in law Frederick and Katherine Koerber, as well as many more extended family and friends, by which will not be forgotten.

He was born in Great Bend, Kansas, March 8, 1944, the son of Russell Peter Schaefer (FG 64657311) and Dorothy Elizabeth Sawrun. He graduated from East Hartford, CT High School in 1962, and later graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Radon and Asbestos detection. On May 8, 1965, he married his lifelong wife, Patricia Ann Schaefer of Brunswick Maine, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Russell had a desire for knowledge and new experiences, which he demonstrated by his varied and successful careers. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1968, as an Antisubmarine Warfare Detection Technician on P-2s at Brunswick Naval Air Station. During his 35 year career with the U.S. Postal Service, he managed the Postal Fleet in Maine, was manager of the Federal Building in Keene, NH, and served as Post Master in Wiscasset, Waldoboro, and Brunswick. Among his many achievements in the Postal Service, he developed the nationwide environmental standards for the EPA, winning him a Presidential award for his innovations, along with many other awards throughout his career. He was most recently employed at the Lowes in Brunswick where he leaves behind many friends and will be fondly remembered.

He was a member of United Lodge of Masons and a former member of Kora Temple Shrine. He pursued woodworking which he learned from his grandfather, and became a skilled craftsman, crafting and selling classic Shaker Boxes. He received his captain's license which he utilized for his own charter business. As a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, he instructed courses in Weapons of Mass Destruction and Blood Born Pathogens for Homeland Security. He volunteered his time and knowledge to Trout Unlimited by teaching children how to flyfish; an art which he had perfected throughout his life and shared with family and friends.

Russell's ashes interred at the gravesite of his mother and a small amount left with his father. Other ashes given to family members.
