Morris Cook Van Note was murdered on 13 Mar 1926 when he got into a gun battle with burglars at the local schoolhouse. He fired on the 2 criminals with his revolver, but they fired back with a shotgun and he was killed. He was the president of the school district. He was killed by Everette Burzette and his cousin Melvin Burzette. Everette was found guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with hard labor at Fort Madison Sate Pen. Melvin pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder and was sentenced to 12 years at the state penitentiary. He was later paroled after 5 years.

Melvin was married to Clara Fryer in 1908 and they lived in Lime Creek.
