Wanek, Randal F. (Randy)

Randal (Randy) F. Wanek, age 61, a Sturgeon Bay resident, died peacefully Sunday, March 2, 2014 at UW Hospital, Madison, surrounded by his family.

He was born on August 31, 1952 in Manitowoc, son of the late Ray and Marge Wanek. Randy graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1970. He then continued his education at UW - Manitowoc and UW - Green Bay. On July 2, 1982 he married the former Sharon Basken at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Randy, along with his wife Sharon, owned and operated Wanek Construction from 1972 until 2010. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 139 and National Association of Demolition Contractors. He was also a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Randy had a strong passion for and dedication to the construction industry. He was a classic car enthusiast and also enjoyed spending time in Door County with family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandson Brayden and his dog Alex. A special thank you to his sister, Kathy Larsen, for donating her kidney in 2005; Randy was forever grateful for her gift of life to him. The family would also like to thank all of the doctors and nursing staff at UW Hospital.

Survivors include his wife: Sharon Wanek, Sturgeon Bay; a daughter: Andrea Wanek (Chase Vogel), Sturgeon Bay; two grandchildren: Brayden and Brynlee; his mother-in-law: Lydia Basken, Manitowoc; brothers and sisters-in-law and sisters and brothers-in-law: Greg (Nancy) Wanek, Madison, Jerry (Nan Gorecki) Wanek, Vancouver, BC, Jack (Sheila) Wanek, Manitowoc, Cindy (Dale) Rahmlow, Mishicot, Kathy (Rich) Larsen, Manitowoc, Doug (Shannon) Wanek, Manitowoc, Steve Wanek, Chicago; three brothers-in-law: Dennis Basken, John (Peggy) Basken and Jim Basken, all of Manitowoc; and a sister-in-law: Ann Basken, Antigo. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law: Norman Basken, a brother-in-law: Ron Basken and a sister-in-law: Delores Basken.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo - 1121 North 14th Street, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. David Beaudry with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014. A prayer service will conclude the visitation at 6:30 p.m. led by Deacon Alan Boeldt. Friends may also call Friday morning at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
