Jan was born in Chicago and lived there until 1945 when at age 5 her parents divorced and she moved with her mother to Pittsburgh, Pa. There, she attended Mt. Assisi Academy, a Catholic girl's school. She later began taking ballet lessons and her love of dancing led from ballet to modern dance. Her interest and talent in performing resulted in her taking acting lessons and eventually she began performing at the Pittsburgh Playhouse where she attracted much outside attention for her stage efforts. She began using the stage name "Jan Norris", using the surname of her stepfather, Chester Norris.
At age 17, Jan moved to New York, joining the cast of the Broadway hit show "Happy Hunting", and later appeared in the Broadway production of "Goldilocks". While in New York, she met and after 18 months, married Archie Archambault, an aspiring actor.
In 1959 they moved to California, and began raising a family, with two boys, Clint and David Joseph. Jan eventually landed acting roles in three Hollywood films. Her most important role was in the 1961 movie "Splendor in the Grass with Warren Beatty and Natalie Wood. She also starred in the 1962 TV series "It's a Man's World", and appeared in several other TV series.
Jan's acting career abruptly ended when at age 24, she suffered a brain aneurysm, leaving her with a disability from which she never fully recovered. She passed away in 1985 from complications of this disability.
Note: Jan's cemetery monument identifies her as "Janice Le Maire" as a result of her confidential marriage to Robert Le Maire, which is said to have occurred shortly before her death.
