The parents of John (Vining) Livingston (1826-1898) were: William Washington Livingston, Sr. who was born on 17 Oct 1793 at Burke County, Georgia and died on 24 Sep 1841 at Jefferson Co., GA and his wife, Rachel (Vining) Livingston who was born on 14 Dec 1799 in Georgia and died on 22 Jul 1848 in Jefferson Co., GA. NOTE: Their 23 Jun 1814 Jefferson County, Georgia marriage record is attached.

William Livingston served as a private in the War of 1812 in Thomas' 2nd Georgia Militia Regiment.

The 1820, 1830 and 1840 US Censuses of Jefferson County, Georgia enumerated the household of William Livingston and his wife, Rachael (Vining) Livingston. Both died prior to the 1850 US Census of Jefferson County, Georgia.

The 1850 US Census of District 48, Jefferson Co., GA. revealed that many of their children were still living together in the same household after the 1848 death of their mother, Rachel (Vining) Livingston. Living in the household were 24 Y/O John (Vining) Livingston and his 24 Y/O twin brother, William Washington Livingston, Jr. Also living in the household was 17 Y/O Mary Jane (King) Livingstone who was the wife of William Washington Livingston, Jr. They were married on 31 Jul 1850 in Jefferson Co., GA. Mary Jane (King) Livingston was born on 18 Sep 1833 in Jefferson Co., GA and died on 29 Dec 1918 in Cherokee Co., AL. Also a member of the household was 26 Y/O Mary K. Livingston, an older sister of John and William, who married Theron Hopkin Warr in 1850 at Jefferson Co., GA. Confusingly, living in the household was a 30 Y/O "female" whose actual name was "Jane" E. Livingston but whose name was misread and transcribed into the official records from the census page as "John" E. Livingston due to being smudged (an enumeration error). She was actually a sister of John (Vining) and William W. Livingston, Jr. The only other sibling enumerated in this 1850 household was 19 Y/O Sarah C. Livingston who married Thomas N. Granberry (1827-1905) on 03 May 1853 at Jefferson Co., GA.

The 1860 US Census of the 84th District of Jefferson Co., GA enumerated the household of 39 [sic-34] Y/O John "Levingston" [sic] and 41 Y/O Jane "Levingston" [sic] which superficially appears that they were husband and wife. By recognizing the enumeration error on the 1850 census of Jefferson Co., GA, mentioned above, we know they were brother and sister, thus John Livingston wasn't married in 1860. The last mention of Jane E. Livingston occurs in the 1870 US Census of Jefferson Co., GA where she was enumerated as a 50 Y/O spinster living alone as Head of Household. Living next door to her in 1870 was her sister, Mary K. (Livingston) Warr, and her family. It appears Jane never married.

The 1860 US Census of District 1, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated 33 Y/O William Washington Livingston, Jr, twin brother of John (Vining?) Livingston. Also in the household was his 28 Y/O wife, Mary Jane (King) Livingston and their children: 9 Y/O John W. Livingston born in AL; 6 Y/O Robert Livingston born in AL; and twin 1 Y/O daughters, Martha and Mary Livingston also born in AL. William and Jane were married on 31 Jul 1850 at Jefferson Co., GA as noted above and their first child, John W. Livingston, was born about 1851 in Alabama. This indicates they moved from Jefferson Co., GA to Cherokee Co., AL in 1850/51.

John Vining Livingston married Elizabeth Virginia Hannah on 04 Sep 1862 in Jefferson Co., GA. Their first child, Susie Viola Livingston, was born on 02 Jan 1864 in Jefferson Co., GA. A copy of their marriage record is attached to this memorial. NOTE: There is an error in transcribing Elizabeth Virginia Hannah's name. Her first name was "Elizabeth" not "Georgia". This recording error is discussed in the 1870 US Census record of Cherokee County, Alabama below.

Page 380 of the "1864 Census for Re-Organizing the Georgia Militia" records 38 Y/O John Livingston, born in GA, living in Jefferson County, GA working as an "Overseer". See copy of this record attached to this memorial.

John and Elizabeth Virginia (Hannah) Livingston moved from Jefferson Co., GA to Cherokee Co., AL, between 1867, date of the birth of Willie Livingston, their last Georgia born child, and Jan 1870, date of the birth of their first Alabama born child, a son named "Babe", enumerated as 5 months old in the 24 June 1870 US Census of Cherokee Co., AL. This "Babe" Livingston probably died as there is no further record of him. John probably made the decision to move to Cherokee Co., Alabama in order to be near his twin brother, William Washington Livingston, Jr. Both John and William Livingston were enumerated as 44 years old in the 1870 US Census of Township 9, Range 10, Stylesville Post Office, Cherokee Co., AL.

The 1870 US Census of Township 9, Range 10, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of 44 Y/O John Livingston, a farmer born in GA, and his his 30 Y/O wife, "Georgia" Livingston, born in GA. Also living in their household were their children: 6 Y/O Susan Viola Livingston, born in GA; 3 Y/O Willie Livingston, their last child born in GA and 5 months old "Babe" Livingston, their first child born in Alabama, thus they moved to Alabama between 1867 and 1870 as the 1870 US Census Township 9, Range 10, Cherokee Co., AL was taken on 24 Jun 1870.
A confusing entry to many Livingston family researchers is the name given John's wife in the 1870 US Census Cherokee C., AL. Her name was enumerated as "Georgia" which is an enumeration error; it is her birth place. The 1880, 1900, and 1910 US Censuses of Cherokee Co., AL give her name as "Elizabeth". In addition, the death certificate of her daughter, Susie Viola Livingston Chappell, states that her mother's name was Elizabeth Virginia Hannah.

The 1880 US Census of Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of 53 Y/O John Livingston, a farmer, and his 40 Y/O wife, Elizabeth Virginia (Hannah) Livingston. Also living in the household were their children: 16 Y/O Susan Viola Livingston; 13 Y/O Willie Livingston; 6 Y/O Alma Livingston and their 5 Y/O daughter, Ida Livingston. This was the last record of John Livingston.

The 1900 US Census of Dixon, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the 61 Y/O widow, Elizabeth (Hannah) Livingston, listed as mother-in-law, living with her 25 year old daughter, Ida A. Payne, wife of 41 Y/O John Payne, and her family.

The 1910 US Census of Dixon, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the 71 Y/O widow, Elizabeth (Hannah) Livingston, listed as mother-in-law, still residing in the household of her 35 Y/O daughter, Ida A. (Livingston) Payne, wife of 57 Y/O John C. Payne, and her family.

The children of John and Elizabeth (Hannah) were:
1) Susan Viola Livingston, b. 02 Jan 1864 Jefferson Co., GA, d. 04 Apr 1933 Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL.
2) Willie Livingston, b. 1867 Jefferson Vo., GA
3) "Babe" Livingston, b. Male born Jan 1870-Must have died young as no further records were found.
4) Alma Livingston, b. 1874 Cherokee Co., AL.
5) Ida Livingston, b. 1875 Cherokee Co., AL, m. John Payne of Georgia.
