Theodore "Ted" Baumgarten, age 74, of Eleva, Wisconsin, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. He was born on December 14, 1926, in Reedsburg, Wis., to Otto and Dorothy (Huebing) Baumgarten. Ted attended Baraboo High School, upon his graduation he entered the U.S. Army and served in Okinawa before being honorable discharged. He attended UW-Madison, where he played baseball and received his bachelor's degree. He received his master's at UW-Whitewater. He started his teaching career at Wabeno, Wis., where he met his wife, Faye Gregg. They married December 19, 1953. He taught in Wabeno and Prairie du Sac, and was administrator at Eleva-Strum until his retirement in 1986. He coached many spots throughout his career, with baseball being his favorite. He was inducted into the High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Baraboo Elks, the Masons, and the Eleva Commercial Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on his farm and spending time with his family and many friends. He is survived by his wife, Faye; and his children, Gregg (Jackie) Baumgarten of Chandler,
Ariz., Tim (Shiree) Baumgarten of Kingman, Ariz., Lisa (Wes) Starkey of Strum, Wis., Kari (Tom) Nelson of Stoughton, Wis., and Bill Anderson of Prairie du Sac, Wis.

He was a one-of-a-kind grandfather who was cherished by his
grandchildren. Gregg's children, Lauren and Drew Baumgarten, Tim's child, Max Baumgarten, Lisa's children, Joshua and McKenzie Skoug, and Hannah Starkey, and Kari's children, Lynsi, Quinn, Kylie and Josiah Nelson. Also surviving are his sister, Evelyn (Gary) Krugman of Madison, Wis,; his sister-in-law, Sally Gregg of Mesa, Ariz.; his brothers-in-law, Farres Harrison of Verona, Wis.; and John (Janelle) Gregg of Wabeno; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son,Kurt; his parents; his sisters, Edna Mae Schneider and Emmy Lou Harrison; and his mother and father-in-law, Inez and John Gregg.
Funeral services were held at the Eleva Lutheran Church in Eleva.

He touched many lives as a teacher, coach and friend, but none more importantly than as a husband, father and grandfather. He is deeply loved and will be truly missed.
