Augusta was one of five children born to Valentine Pfening and Emilie "Amelia" Eschmann. About 1874 she married William C. Kanouse and they had thirteen children. Of those, eleven grew to adulthood and survived their mother: Valentine, John, Anna, Minnie, Jacob, Nora, Callie, Bertha, Hattie, Herbert and Russell. Augusta died at her home, 124 High Street, after a year's illness. She was 69.
