OBITUARY

Proverbs 31:10, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” Truly a good woman left our midst when our beloved Lena Sanders Howerton passed away at the Bowers Hospice House on Wednesday, Sept. 21st, 2011. She was in her 95th year.

The sixth of seven children, Lena Rhelda Bolen was born on Nov. 13, 1915, at Rhodell. Her parents were the late Joseph Benjamin and Ida Stephenson Mann Bolen. Her brother and sisters, Garrett Bolen, Roxanne Bailey, Edna Akers, Elizabeth Asbury, Sadie Deweese and Sylvia Edith Bolen, have preceded Lena in death. Lena’s mother died when she was five years old during the influenza epidemic. Lena loved Ida as her mother. Ida brought into this union a son, George Evans who became Lena’s brother.

A longtime resident of the Rhodell community, Lena would marry Coy Sanders from North Carolina. To their union were born nine children.

A son, Earl, died in the Korean Conflict; daughters, Joyce died at age 2 and Colette Lynn Lockard died in 2005. Left to cherish her memory are her surviving children, Bobby Gene Sanders and his wife, Eula, of Austin, Texas, Wanda Raynell Bossler and her husband, Stuart, of Catasauqua, Pa., Juanita Irene Rhodes and her husband, Robert, of Painesville, Ohio, Patricia Hamilton and her husband, Gary, of Nashville, Tenn., Douglas Sanders and his wife, Kathy, and Jeffery Sanders and his wife, Carolyn, all of Beckley.

Lena was the proud grandmother of 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, Eula Marie Sanders, and a great-great-grandchild, Drew Parke, have preceded her in death. Coy Sanders died on August 14, 1962. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

In 1965 Lena would marry James Howeton. She has enjoyed a close relationship with his children throughout her life. They are Noah Howerton, Amos Howerton, Carolyn Beggs, Martha Moorefield and her husband, Donnie, and Mary McKinney.

Lena’s children want to share with you about their Mother’s life. It has been wonderful. Although she has faced many great challenges with the loss of loved ones, she always looked forward to the future and had a very positive attitude. She enjoyed many years of volunteer work at the Raleigh General Hospital, the Veterans Area Medical Center and the American Red Cross where she logged over 500 hours. She loved to travel and was blessed to have gone to Europe. Among her adventures were trips to Israel and Greece. She traveled throughout the continental United States and went to Alaska and Hawaii. When Lena lived in Rhodell, she was a well-respected neighbor. Folks always sought her out for help and advice. Lena was extremely well-educated. She was “self taught” and even in the last years of her life, Lena was wanting to learn and experience new things. Just days before she died, one of her sons asked her about “Going to Heaven” and she responded, “I want to talk right, think straight and do good deeds.” And so what a life, well lived, well respected, well loved.

On Saturday, September 24th, at 3 p.m. we will remember the life of this great lady with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Lena was a member of the Bolt Church of God. Her pastor, Rev. Randall Pugh, will be officiating. Lena will then be laid to rest at the Sunset Memorial Park beside the father of her children. Her family will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Condolences may be sent to the family’s guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com.
