"This sad, though not unexpected event, occurred at his home, in this county [Preston County], on Wednesday evening May 19th, at 7 o'clock. His death was caused by softening of the brain, which was brought about by his financial embarrassments.

Mr. Hardman has led an eventful business life. He was a man of large hopes and great ambition. The Intelligencer says that he could have sold his furnace property in 1873 for a sum that would have, after paying his debts, left him an ample fortune.

But, characteristic of his great ambition, he said why not make a million instead of thousands, so he went on. The panic came, iron declined, and although he struggled and caught at every straw he was overtaken, and died involved to the amount of four hundred thousand dollars.

Mr. Hardman was better to the country than to himself. His ideas were large, and he was only content when carrying on a great enterprise. His many failures are not due to a want of perseverance or tireless industry, but to the fact that he overlooked little things--little leaks wasted his substance. He looked sanguinely to the end, but did not properly consider the details of the means.

His remains were conveyed to Wheeling, his former home, where he has hosts of friends, and were buried in that city on last Saturday morning [May 22] at 9 o'clock.

He was upwards of sixty years of age."
