Vivian's name was spelled either Vivian or Vivien, depending on which document one looks. Her birth certificate says Vivian as do the 1920, 1930, and 1940 U.S. Federal Censuses. Her phone directory entries and her Social Security entries spell her name Vivien. Names and spellings of names were at times fluid in the Cade family.

Vivian was born at the Gladstone Mine near French Gulch, California. She was the tenth living child of eleven born to Sarah Ann Britton Cade and Frank Lewis Cade.

When the younger children were of school age, the family often spent the winter in either Merced or Fresno so they could attend school. Summers were spent in either the French Gulch or the Trinity Center area.

In 1935 at age 20, Vivian married Reese Evans and they would go on to have two children. They divorced sometime in the 1940s; in 1949 Vivian married Frank Spinola. They remained married until 1988 when Frank died. They had no children.
