Bartley Farry, 80, first GOP mayoral candidate in Portage

PORTAGE- Bartley J. Farry, 80, the first Republican mayoral candidte for the city of Portage, died Maonday at a local nursing home.
Mr. Farry was defeated in his mayoral bid in 1968 by Arthur Olson. Mr. Farry, a Portage resident 57 years coming from Lake Station, was a former police commissioner and was active in civic and community affairs.
He was born Jan. 26, 1907 in Dalton, Ill., the son of John and Lillian (Reich) Farry. On Feb. 26, 1928 in Drown Point, he married Pearle Samuelson, who died Jan. 1, 1982.
Mr. Farry was employed as a roller at US Steel Sheet and Tim Mill, retiring after 45 years of service. He was a former steward and grievance officer for United Steelworkers Local 1066, and was a member of Dunes Lodge 741 F&AM, Tall Cedars of Michigan City, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend and Fraternal Order of Police Associates of Portage.
Surviving are two daughters, Jaclyn Macedo and Joyce Millikin, both of Portage; a sister Lillian Hawthorne of Louisana; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services 10 am Thursday at Hope Lutheran Church, where he was a member; the Rev. S. L. Klopfer officiating; burial in McCool Cemetery. Visitation at Engel Funeral Home with Masonic rites; memorials to the church or charity of donor's choice.
