Ephraim "Eph" John Hunter, 74, of Idaho Falls, died February 13, 2004, at Idaho Falls Care Center after a lingering illness.
He was born November 2, 1929, in Burton, Idaho, to David Patterson and Mary Ann Furniss Hunter. He grew up and attended schools in Rexburg and graduated from Madison High School in 1947. He later attended Ricks College in Rexburg, where he was on the football team. He served with the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 as a private first class.
On July 9, 1953, he married Vera Lu Mortensen in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. She died November 16, 1991. He married Karen Gentle on October 2, 1996. He was employed by Madison County in the Road and Maintenance Department, at Mokami Brothers' Farms in Osgood, and by the City of Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Department, and he later retired from Firestone Tire Co. in Idaho Falls.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served as a home teacher, physical facilities coordinator, and Cub Scout pack leader. In about 1965, he started the first Cub Scout pack at Dora Erickson School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and farming. Eph loved his cats; he was dedicated to his family, was kind-hearted, and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Gentle Hunter of Idaho Falls; his children, John (Nanette) Hunter of Seattle, Washinton, James (Debbie) Hunter of Idaho Falls, Colleen Hunter of Omaha, Nebraska, and Kevin Hunter of Idaho Falls; his stepchildren, Cindy (Gary) Harkness of Idaho Falls and Martin (Chris) Gentle of Rigby; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Hunter of St. Anthony. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Douglas Hunter; sisters Vivetta Miller, Alzada Stoneberg, Lorena Hunter and Mary Ann Whittington; and brothers David, Glen, and Clarence Hunter.
