John Cannon Rhynes was born 7 July 1844 in Bradley County, Tennessee. He was the son of William Hamilton Rhynes and Nancy (Harris) Rhynes, both of whom died by the time he reached adulthood.
John Cannon Rines married Ary A. Hatfield (sometimes named as "Ara Hatfield"; born about 1848 in Fentress County, Tennessee) in Jefferson County, Illinois on 15 September 1872. She died about 1873–1874, leaving an infant daughter, M. F. Rines, whom John Cannon Rines gave up for adoption.
John Cannon Rines married Minerva P. (Adcock) Kinman, a widow with five sons (Charley, John, Joe, and twins Will and Lee/Leo), in Jefferson County, Illinois on 4 December 1879.
With her he had three biological children:
• Thomas Arley Ryan
• Estelle M. "Stella" (Ryan) Yates (possibly named Estelle Maza Ryan, Maza Estelle Ryan, or Mazie Estelle Ryan)
• Arthur Merl Ryan
Minerva P. (Adcock) Kinman Rines died 25 July 1907 after suffering a stroke. She was buried in Round Knoll Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. Her grave may be # 14718235.
John Cannon Ryan died 10 March 1931 at about 6:30 pm at the home of his son Merl. The probable cause of death was pneumonia.
