Allen moved with his parents to Lambertville, NJ in the 1860's. His father was a railroad conductor. Allen moved to Omaha, NE by the early 1890's. He was a salesman for Fairbanks, Morse & Co. from 1891-1897, they sold scales and machinery and were the largest manufacturer of gasoline, kerosene, and crude oil engines in the United States at the time. Around 1900, Allen started a business, Allen P. Ely & Co, a machinery and gasoline engine dealership. He ran this business with a partner until 1911.
Allen married Carrie Bell Johns in September 1893, they lived in Omaha. Carrie passed away in 1903.
Allen married Florence May Tozer in August 1904. They lived in Dundee, NE before moving to a farm near Elkhorn after 1911. Allen was a poultry raiser in 1930.
After Allen's death, Florence moved to Beverly Hills, Calif. She was working as a housemaid in 1940.

ELY-Allen P., age 74 years. Survived by his wife, 2 sisters, Mrs. A.C. Arend, Omaha, and Mrs. Abbie Peterson, and one brother, Frank, both of Eden, Wyo.
Funeral services at the residence, one-half mile east of Elkhorn, Neb. at 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment Elk City cemetery, Crosby mortuary service.
