Burned To Death In Genesee Township,
M. A. Baylor, formerly of Houghton, Loses Life In Fire In Root House --

Michael A. Baylor, formerly of Fillmore, was burned to death in a fire which destroyed a one-story house owned by Asa P. Root of Bolivar and located on Salt Rising road, town at Genesee, Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock. The charred body was removed from the fire ruins at 6 o'clock by Undertaker H. J. Loop and L. R. Hills, Chief of the Bolivar Fire Department, and brought to the local undertaking rooms.
Permission to remove the body was given by Coroner N. H. Fuller of Friendship after he had investigated the case.
Baylor had been living alone in the house, which was formerly occupied by O. E. Cartwright. He had gone to Olean Tuesday, remaining in that city until 12:30 Wednesday morning. When he left there he told relatives that he was going to Andover, and then to Hornell to work. Instead he returned to his home at Salt Rising, little realizing what fate had in store for him. It was nearly two hours after the fire had broken out before the body could be removed from the ruins.
The Bolivar Fire Department responded promptly to the alarm, but the fire had gained such headway that it was impossible to save the building. Just what caused the fire is a mystery. The supposition is that it started from an over heated stove. The Bolivar Fire Department upon arrival at the scene of the fire at once laid 1,000 feet of hose and pumped water from the Root pressure plant of 500 barrels capacity. The capacity of the plant was kept at its level by the pressure plant being kept in operation. By hard work the firemen saved the barn, located near the house from being burned. They also removed Baylor's Whippet car from the building where it had been left by its owner after his return from Olean. The car had been locked.
Baylor was formerly employed as a pumper on the Root lease at Salt Rising, but had not been working of late. He drove team last summer during the construction of the township county improved road in Genesee township. He also was a former truck driver.
It is said that Baylor was a member of the American Legion, having served in the World war. He was aged 42 years, 11 months and 15 days.
Surviving him are one brother, Roy Baylor of Fillmore; a nephew, Fred Baylor of the same village; and a niece, Mrs. William Muntz of Olean. It is said that he and his wife had parted.
The body was taken to Belfast where the funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
