Robert L. Dawson, 92, longtime resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Saturday, March 15, 2014, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer and COPD.

Bob had a long and varied career. He earned a master of business degree from University of Arizona. He worked for the Arizona Farm Bureau and DES. Then he decided teaching was his calling and enrolled at Arizona State University, where he earned a master of education. He also served his community. He was a charter member of Hauchuca 50 and the 1200 Club. he served with VICAP, Victim Witness, and was Cochise County chairman for the Republican Party, where he and Phyllis served as precinct committeemen for many years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Phyllis; daughters, Ace Tobak of Taylor, Texas, Sandra Lee Szymeczek (Matthew, Sr.) of San Tan Valley, Ariz., and Susanne Marie Akers (Dale II) of Tucson; grandchildren, Matthew Wayne Szymeczek, Jr. (Amber), Rachel Ann Szymeczek of San Tan Valley, Kevin Robert Szymeczek (Kala) serving in the Army in Georgia, Shandii Lee Harrison (Christopher) of Hereford, Crystal Rose Akers, Houston, Texas, and Dale Leroy Akers, III, Tucson; great-grandchildren, Emmitt Micah Szymeczek and Ella Szymeczek of San Tan Valley, Seth Jay Harrison and Alexandria Marie Harrison of Hereford, and Colin Robert Szymeczek of Georgia.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Craig; his parents; and siblings, Orvel Junior Dawson, Eleanor Cox, Frances Honrath, John Dawson, and Samuel Dawson.
The family expresses its heartfelt thanks to Hospice Casa de la Paz for its constant service during Bob's final days. Without these wonderful women, our task of caring for him would have been all but impossible. We think of them as angels in disguise.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 21, at 10 a.m. at the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, with full military honors.
