Darrell Arnold Almgren passed away peacefully at his home in Riverside, CA on March 5th at the age of 66.

Darrell was born in Bakersfield, CA to Alvin and Erva Almgren on August 29, 1947. He was raised as a member of The First Church of The Nazarene and attended local schools, graduating from Bakersfield High School in 1966 (Class of 1965). After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed at Centerville Beach Naval Base and Guam Naval Base, proudly serving his country from 1966-1970. He had a very strong work ethic and maintained a successful career as an operating engineer, retiring only a few months before his death.

Darrell enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, tending to his garden and delivering his homegrown vegetables and eggs to friends and neighbors. He was an avid racing fan and had a successful driving career of his own. He was a loyal friend and touched the lives of many people with his smile and trademark sense of humor, which he maintained throughout his long battle with cancer.

Darrell was preceded in death by his mother, Erva Almgren. He is survived by his father, Alvin Almgren; daughter and son-in-law Teena and Jeff Lawson; daughter and son-in-law Peggiann and Ron Ashford; son and daughter-in-law Darrell Jr. and Lorie Almgren; grandchildren, Bradley Holley, Garrett Holley, Taylor Clemmons, Elizabeth Ashford, Alexander Ashford, Haylie Sprago and Chase Almgren; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Betty Almgren and their family; brother, John Almgren; and many beloved extended family members and friends.

Darrell will be laid to rest with honors at Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd., on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. Family and Friends are invited.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The First Church of The Nazarene.
