Alexander B. Deveney, 92, formerly of Lansdowne, Pa., a retired engineer and community activist, died of heart failure on November 17, 2005 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.
Mr. Deveney was educated at Girard College, then a school for fatherless boys in Philadelphia and was a captain of the school's swim team. His son Sandy said Mr. Deveney treasured his scrapbook of Girard memorabilia.
After earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University, Mr. Deveney went to work for Philadelphia Electric Co. During World War II, he served in the Navy in the states. He then returned to PECO, where he retired after 41 years in 1978. He was a consultant for Hake, Inc. until 1994.
In the 1950s, Mr. Deveney helped found the Lansdowne Swim Club. In the 1960s and early '70s, he served on the Lansdowne Borough Council where he initiated municipal trash collection and helped create a redevelopment plan for the downtown district.
He later served in the vestry and usher guild of St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Lansdowne.
In addition to his son, Mr. Deveney is survived by his wife of 25 years, Florence Steele Deveney; her children Reid Heeren, Carolyn Allen and Susan Nero; and 2 grandchildren.
His wife of 36 years, Patricia Mulvey Deveney, died in 1973, and a daughter Patricia Tuzzi died in 1988.
