On December 10, 2005, at approximately 5:20 am, NYC Police Officer Daniel Enchautegui of the 40th Precinct was gunned down near his Bronx home in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx.

Officer Enchautegui was off-duty when he went to investigate a possible burglary-in-progress next door to his Bronx home and was confronted by two suspects, later identified as LILLO BRANCATO and STEVE ARMENTO. The off-duty officer was shot once in the chest and was able to return fire before losing consciousness. He hit Lillo Brancato once in the torso and Steve Armento, who was armed with a .357 revovler, was shot four times. Both Brancato and Armento were removed to Jacobi Hospital in serious but stable condition. Police officer Enchautegui was then later pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital, Bronx.

Lillo Brancato is better known as the actor who played Robert Deniro's 17 year old son in the movie 'A Bronx Tale.'

"...The saddest thing in life is wasted talent." (A quote from the movie, 'A Bronx Tale.')

The saddest moment for this author was watching, on the day of the funeral, the pain etched in the face of a proud and grieving father (Pedro Enchautegui) who just lost his only son.

Police officer Enchautegui, who was posthumously promoted to Detective 1st Grade by NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly at Police Officer Enchautegui's funeral, will be missed by the members of the 40th Precinct, as well as the 40th Precinct Detective Squad.

Rest in peace my friend, FIDELIS AD MORTEM.
