Aquilla was a son of John Boyd and Ellen Mallernee. In 1880 he was living in Jefferson Co., Ohio and at 14 was listed as a "laborer." He married on March 18, 1898 at Dennison, Ohio to Miss Mary Lucinda Paige of Bowerston, Harrison Co., Ohio. He was an engineer for the PRR and died at home of a cerebral hemmorhage.
