U.S. Congressman. After taking an academic course studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1846 and practiced law in Attica, New York. He moved to the Kansas Territory in 1856 and practiced law in Shannon, Kansas. He also was involved in real estate development, coal mining, and constructing operating railroads. Entering politics, he was the Mayor of Lecompton Kansas, in 1858 and was a member of the Kansas State Senate, (1862 to 1863). Returning to New York in 1880, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving (1883 to 1885). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his agricultural pursuits, until his death.
