Dr. Reuben Adams Jr. dies at 73

Physician delivered, taught many throughout career as obstetrician

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, 3821 University Blvd. in University Park, for Dr. Reuben Homer Adams Jr., who brought many babies into the world and many physicians into his profession.

Dr. Adams, 73, died Monday of natural causes at his Dallas home. He will be buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

"Everybody adored the man," said Dr. Norman E. Gant Jr., chairman emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. "To put it mildly, the students loved Reuben Adams. He was an excellent teacher and a fantastic doctor.

Dr. Adams delivered the babies of many of his students, their wives and the wives of faculty members, Dr. Gant said.

Dr. Adams was born in Kendallville, Ind., and he grew up in Boston, where he was the youngest Eagle Scout in the history of that council, his family said.

After graduating from Howe Military School, he attended the University of Cincinnati. He joined the Navy at age 17. After World War II, he earned a bachelor's degree at Southern Methodist University in 1948 and a medical degree from Duke University in 1953.

After a surgical internship at Duke, Dr. Adams came to UT Southwestern. He became chief resident of the obstetrics-gynecology program in 1956. In January 1957, he started teaching at UT Southwestern and became a full professor in September 1966. He also held the administrative post of assistant dean for student affairs and admissions.

In August 1970, Dr. Adams was named chairman of the obstetrics-gynecology department at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. He continued his professorship at UT Southwestern.

In addition, Dr. Adams "still took night calls at Parkland" to deliver babies, Dr. Gant said.

In 1967, Dr. Adams received the Outstanding Teacher Award at UT Southwestern. In 1970, he was elected to the board of the Dallas County Medical Society, where he served for two years.

He later served as president of the Dallas County Hospital District's attending medical staff and spent two years as an oral examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

When Dr. Adams retired from Baylor in 1992, "Baylor replaced him with five different people," said his son, Charles R. Adams of Dallas.

Dr. Adams maintained a small practice until his death, his son said.

In addition to his son, Dr. Adams is survived by his wife, Lindalyn Bennett Adams of Dallas; two other sons, Richard Adams and William Haynes Adams, both of Waco; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Baylor University Medical Center Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 3500 Gaston Ave., Dallas, TX 75246, or a charity of choice.
