Miriam and Syd Cassyd were pioneers in Civil Rights and other progressive movements for the entire 52 years of their marriage. They became involved with the ACLU when they moved to California in 1945. For three years they were volunteer intake counselors and delighted in their work. Miriam was President of the American Federation of Teachers/AFL-CIO, instrumental in their unionization and civil rights activities. She was a consultant to the City of Inglewood, inaugurating alternative teaching methods, as well as a teacher for 20 years. Syd founded the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1946, was its fourth President, and has twice received their highest honor, the Governors' Award Emmy. In 1955, Syd produced a series of TV shows based on Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas' book, "An Almanac of Liberty." He also produced a docudrama, "The Cloning of Cornell Woolrich."
