Mabel Susan Lively was the middle child born to Noah Fountain Kelley and Katie Kathryn Cromwell. Her mother died when she was just 8 and her father could not care for 3 children, so the children were sent to live with relatives. Mabel met Johnnie Logan Lively when they were both attending the United Brethern Church and were married on 28 October 1905 in the town of LaMar, Missouri when Mabel was 15 and Johnnie was 18. Johnnie Lively was a coal miner and so the family lived in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa before moving to Wyoming in 1925 where there was work in the mines. Mabel and Johnnie had 5 children and she miscarried two others. One of her sons, John Edward, was born with a weak heart and died in 1925 at the age of 14. The family packed up everything they owned in a used Model A and drove from Missouri to Wyoming where they settled in and around Rock Springs, Diamondville and Kemmerer. Mabel did not like the Wyoming prairies or the sage brush flat lands but she endured the harsh terrain and temperatures and was known by the whole town to grow the best vegetables and to be able to cure burns with Irish prayers.

Mabel remained in Wyoming until her son-in-law returned from WWII and thereafter she moved to Manhattan Beach near Los Angeles and lived with her daughter Louise. After her daughter Rosamae and husband Walt Trewin moved to Manhattan Beach, Mable moved in with Rose and Walt. Mable and Rosamae lived together until Mabel's death on 29 March 1981. Mabel Susan Kelley Lively is buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery, in the Capistrano Gardens, #3465, panel 30-F-8.
