As a result of Ralphs death, Mary had a free lifetime boarding pass for Union Pacific Railroad. Most of her trips were from Fort Calhoun to Omaha to visit family and shop. At least once a year she would travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to visit her family there.
She was a mid-wife, delivering children in the local area and into portions of Harrison county, Iowa. She once ran a boarding house in the Calhoun area. Later, she would do housekeeping chores and, at times, act as a live-in care giver. She was a hard working and very independent lady.
