EMMETT --- Arthur Fred " Art " Janssen , 75, Emmett, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at a Topeka hospital.
He was born Sept. 2, 1926, near Belvue, to John and Greta Gesina Pageler Janssen . He graduated from Emmett High School in 1944 and spent most of his life in the Emmett community. He was a heavy equipment owner and operator in Pottawatomie and Jackson counties for more than 50 years. He was instrumental in the construction of many terraces, ponds, lagoons and private drives. He also was a farmer and stockman.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army in Germany and France.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Emmett and served on the church administrative board for several years.
He was treasurer of Emmett Township and had served on the Emmett Grade School Board of Education. He served served on the Farmers Union Co-op Business Association board and other county boards. He was a member of the former Emmett Lions Club for many years.
He married Mildred Irene Pflum on April 22, 1950, in the Wells Creek community south of Belvue. She died March 24, 1986. He married Anita H. Holladay on Dec. 15, 1990, in St. Marys. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Larry A. Janssen , Baldwin City; two daughters, Judith A. St. Cin, San Jose, Calif., and Sandra L. Moore, San Antonio; a stepson, Douglas R. Holladay, Paxico; two stepdaughters, Anne M. Holladay, Yakutat, Alaska, and Leslie S. Weirough, Aurora, Colo.; two brothers, Arol Janssen , Emmett, and Arnold Janssen , St. Marys; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Emmett. Burial will be in St. Clere Cemetery north of Emmett. Mr. Janssen will lie in state from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Piper-Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys, where a wake prayer service at 7:30 p.m. will take place during visitation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Emmett or the American Cancer Society.
