PEORIA HEIGHTS - Thomas L. "Tom" Canopy, 66, of Peoria Heights, passed away at 6:35 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, in Peoria.
Born June 19, 1947, in Peoria, to Clarence and Gwen (Stubbs) Canopy.
He married Terry McCoy. He later married Laure Kraeger on Feb. 11, 2010, in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Tim Canopy; his stepfather, Robert (Loretta) Null; two stepdaughters, Mandy (Brent) Kupferschmid and Amanda Lyndaker; one stepson, John (Alexis) Lyndaker; two stepgrandchildren, Hannah and Waylon Kupferschmid and three sisters, Mary (Rick) Huse, Susan (Scott) Bickly and Billie (Dale) Swearengen.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Tom served in the United States Army in Vietnam, attaining the rank of sergeant in Company C, 2nd Battalion, 504th Infantry (Airborne). He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on Feb. 29, 1968. He worked for Caterpillar Inc., in Mossville, for 35 years, retiring in 2012. A member of the Secor Sportsman Club, Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. He loved spending time with his family and sitting on the front porch, sharing stories and time with friends.
A memorial visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory, in Pekin. Military honors will be conducted at 7 p.m. by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team and the United States Army. There will be no funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Secor Fire Protection District or Delavan Fire Department, 416 Pine St., Delavan, IL 61734 or to OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home, 8630 Illinois Route 91, Peoria, IL 61615.
