From the Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, Miss., July 2, 1949, p. 7:

Services for Mrs. Belle Wells Smith, were held at Baldwin chapel at 4 o’clock Friday afternoon, Dr. G. Norman Price, pastor of Parkway Baptist church, officiating. Mrs. Smith died early Friday morning at the Old Ladies home after an illness of several years. She was 85.

As the wife of the late Joe G. Smith, a prominent merchant of Pontotoc, Mrs. Smith resided there all her life until the past 10 years. She came to Jackson and was employed at Whitfield under the administration of Gov. Paul B. Johnson. She was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include: one brother, Al. D. Wells and one sister, Mrs. Ola Lemons, both of Pontotoc, and several nieces and nephews. Interment was beside her husband in Greenwood cemetery.

Contributor Richard Wells (50710511) adds the following: Her maiden name was Exie Belle Wells. Her child Jody G Smith, born 1898, lived about a week. He is buried in Pontotoc City cemetery, Pontotoc, Mississippi. I visited their home in Pontotoc when I was a child and recently visited Jody's grave. The birth information is contained in the Souter family bible that I have. G/S of Lonnie & Ida.
