The following report which appeared in the Personal column of the Pahiatua Herald newspaper of August 20, 1917, p4, records some details of his short life.

"Further casualty lists of the recent big push contain the name of Private Len Sowry, son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Sowry of Makomako, who left with the 19th Reinforcements. Born at Woodville and educated at Makomako, Private Sowry was well known in the district and was a fine stamp of young New Zealander. He was only 22 years o age and his death on the field of action has added another name to the growing list of those who hearing their country's call, have made the supreme heroic sacrifice in defence of humanity. The sympathy if very many friends of the whole district is with the family in their grief"
